Biography
Born in Santiago de Cuba, in 1938. He
had qualities as a runner that made up for his short height.
In Rome, 1960 he finished fourth in
the 100 meters’ Olympic final. Four years later in Tokyo, he came in second in
the hectometer. In Mexico, 1968, he added an Olympic silver medal in the 4x100
meter relay. In 1967, in Budapest, Hungary, he matched 10 flat, the world record
in the 100 meters.
In the PANAM Games was third in 1959
and champion in Sao Paulo 1963, both in 100 meter. In two CAC Games he obtained
a title and two third places.
He retired after the Olympics in
Mexico City. He was chosen as the best Cuban athlete of the decade in 1960. He
is the Vice-president of the Cuban Federation of Track & Field. He was also the
Vice-president of NACAC. He is presently acting as Director of INDER (Cuban
Sports Institute). |

Datos biográficos
Nació en Santiago de Cuba,
en 1938. Poseía unas condiciones envidiables como velocista, que compensaban su
baja estatura.
En Roma 1960 se ubicó cuarto
en la final olímpica de los 100 metros. Cuatro años después, en Tokyo, arribó
segundo en la prueba reina del Atletismo. Sumó una medalla de plata en México
68, como integrante de la posta corta de Cuba. En 1967, en Budapest, Hungría,
igualó, con 10 flat, el récord mundial de los 100m.
En Juegos PANAM fue bronce
en 1959 y campeón en Sao Paulo 1963, todo en 100m. En dos Juegos CAC obtuvo 1
título y dos terceros lugares.
Se retiró después de los
Juegos Olímpicos de Ciudad de México. Fue electo el mejor atleta cubano de la
década de 1960. Es vicepresidente de la Federación Cubana de Atletismo y también
fungió como vicepresidente de NACAC. Actualmente se desempeña como directivo en
el INDER (Instituto de Deportes de Cuba). |
