Made his bow on the international scene in 1962 at the CAC Games (Kingston) where he was 3rd in 200m and won silver medals in the two relays. From then until 1972, whenever available, he was a fixture on national teams.
At the 1964 Olympics he won two bronze medals (200m and 4x400m). Two years later at the CAC Games he captured the 200m gold as well as three silvers (100m, 4x100m, 4x400m), and at the Commonwealth Games he won the 4x440y relay gold in world record time and was 2nd at 220y and 3rd at 100y.
Roberts, who studied at North Carolina College (1962-66), did not win any further Olympic medals despite reaching finals in 1968 (200m, 4x400m) and 1972 (4x400m). However, at 200m and 4x400m he won two silver medals at the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, and two bronze medals at the 1971 Panamerican Games in Cali.
Though primarily a half lap specialist Ed Roberts was a complete sprinter throughout his entire racing career winning many good races and clocking fast times at all distances up to 440y. His Games results, showing that he competed more often that not in three or four events, clearly illustrates why he was frequently described by sportswriters as durable and generous.
