Biography
Born in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, in
1950.
In the Montreal 76 Olympic Games, he
achieves an unmatched double: 400m and 800m Olympic titles (1:43.50 in 800,
world record). His Olympic victories allowed him to be chosen as the best
athlete of the year in the world.
In 1977 added another world record
(1:43.44) in the 800 meters, during the University World Games in Sofia,
Bulgaria. For the second consecutive year he was chosen best in the world.
In the regional circuit he has seven
times champion in three CAC Games. He won 4 subtitles in the PANAM Games and a
title and a subtitle in the CAC Champs.
Since his retirement in 1984 he is the
President of the Athletic Cuban Federation. He is also a member of the IAAF
Council and Vicepresident of INDER (Cuba’s Sports Institute). He is the father
of five children: Iria, Alberto Jr.

Datos biográficos
Nació en Santiago de Cuba,
el 3 de diciembre de 1950.
En los Juegos Olímpicos de
Montreal 1976 fue su consagración cuando alcanzó un doble inédito: campeón
olímpico en 400 y 800 metros (con RM de 1:43.50). Esta actuación le valió ser
elegido el mejor atleta del año en el mundo.
En 1977 sumó otro record
mundial (1:43.44) en los 800 metros y por segundo año consecutivo fue electo el
mejor del mundo.
En el contexto regional fue
7 veces campeón en tres Juegos CAC, logró 4 subtítulos en Juegos PANAM y un
título y un subtítulo en un Campeonato CAC.
Desde su retiro en 1984 es
Presidente de la Federación Cubana de Atletismo. Actualmente es Miembro del
Consejo de la IAAF y vicepresidente del INDER (Instituto de Deportes de Cuba).
Es padre de 5 hijos: Iria, Alberto Jr. (quien practica Decatlón), Estéfani,
Javier y Ánima Janet. |
